What is the ruling of Islamic law regarding a father who gifts his only house to his university-student son, given that neither he nor his son has any other dwelling, and considering that he has other wealthy children from a previous wife who have severed ties with their father?

Justice among children in giving is obligatory, due to the established prohibition of favoritism and because of the hatred and resentment it stirs. However, favoritism is permissible for a valid reason, such as illness, a large family, or seeking knowledge. Therefore, there is no harm in a father favoring his needy child with some of his wealth, especially since his siblings are well-off. But mere disobedience from some children is not a justification for favoring others. We advise the estranged children to reconnect with their father and treat him kindly, for it is obligatory, and severing ties with him is a great disobedience and a grave evil.
