Is it permissible to quote Imam Ibn Abd al-Barr's saying, "None shaves his beard except effeminate men," in this era, fearing that common people might understand the word "effeminate" to mean "homosexual," which would alienate them from the methodology of Ahl al-Sunnah?

Allah Almighty commanded that the call to His path be made with wisdom and good counsel. It is not wise to describe everyone who shaves his beard as "effeminate," due to the corruptions that result from such a statement. It was reported from Sheikh Ibn Baz that shaving and trimming the beard is not permissible, due to the Prophet's (peace be upon him) saying: "Trim mustaches and leave beards, act against the polytheists," and "Trim mustaches and lengthen beards, act against the Magians." Obedience to the Messenger (peace be upon him) is obligatory in everything, and there is no obedience to a creature in disobedience to the Creator. As for the saying of some preachers that one who shaves his beard is "effeminate," it is a saying of some early scholars, and its meaning is one who imitates women, not that he is "homosexual" as some common people today imagine. The preacher should avoid this ambiguous phrase, and if he mentions it, it is obligatory to explain its meaning to clarify the intent for the listeners, because the purpose of preaching is to guide listeners and direct them to goodness, not to alienate them from the truth.
