How do we know if regret comes from Satan?

Satan is an enemy to man, and his whispers pertain to destructive, evil, and immoral matters, as Allah Almighty says: ﴿He only commands you to evil and immorality﴾. The regret that arises from committing disobedience is praiseworthy, and it is a form of repentance, for the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: «Regret is repentance.» Whereas regret over missing out on forbidden desires is something Satan loves. Regret may have a praiseworthy origin, such as regretting missing an act of obedience, or it may be innate, or it may be in a way that Satan loves, leading to despair, despondency, and cessation of effort. Satan whispers with despair and despondency and deters from acts of obedience. Sadness is blameworthy if it leads to weakness of heart and preoccupation from obeying Allah, or if it leads to objecting to Allah's decree.
