Is this distress and aversion to religion, accompanied by the recollection of sins, a punishment from God and a bad end, or is it a trial from which one can recover and restore faith?
Do not allow Satan a path to despair of Allah's mercy; rather, magnify hope and optimism in Him, for He is the Forgiving, the Merciful. Increase in righteous deeds, and know that weakness and lethargy are natural phenomena that many experience. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "Indeed, for everything there is a period of enthusiasm, and for every period of enthusiasm there is a period of slackening. If its owner is moderate and balanced, then hope for him. But if he is pointed to by fingers [for his excesses], then do not count him." So, if your resolve weakens, be keen to perform obligations and avoid prohibitions, for this is hoped to lead to success and continuity. You must frequently resort to Allah, seek His forgiveness, and ask Him for steadfastness.
