Is listening to songs—even if they are purposeful or just music—considered a sin, especially with the Hadith that combines "wine, silk, and musical instruments"?

Singing is forbidden if it is accompanied by music, or if it is without music but performed by a woman for men, or if it contains indecent lyrics such as descriptions of women. If the singing is of the forbidden type, then listening to it is absolutely prohibited, as is music.

The widespread presence of music in stores does not change the ruling of its prohibition. A person's commitment to prayer and love for the Qur'an does not absolve him from the sin of listening to music or forbidden singing. It is not permissible to compare one's sin with the sins of others to justify it, for a person is commanded to emulate the righteous. A Muslim should not feel safe that a single sin, even a minor one, could be a cause for his destruction. A servant will be held accountable for his sin unless there is repentance, expiating good deeds, or Allah Almighty's forgiveness.
