Is it permissible for a religiously committed person to listen to music?

One must remain steadfast in religion and abandon singing, which corrupts religion and morals. Ibn al-Qayyim considered it one of Satan's stratagems that turn hearts away from the Qur'an. Listening to singing accompanied by music is forbidden by the imams of the schools of thought and Muslim scholars by consensus. Allah Almighty warned against listening to singing in the Holy Qur'an in His saying: "And among the people is he who buys the amusement of speech to mislead [others] from the way of Allah without knowledge and takes it in ridicule. Those will have a humiliating punishment." (Luqman: 6). Ibn Mas'ud and Ibn Abbas interpreted "amusement of speech" as singing. Among other verses indicating the prohibition of singing are His saying: "Then at this statement do you wonder? And you laugh and do not weep? While you are sporting [in heedlessness]." (An-Najm: 59-61), and His saying: "And incite [to disobedience] whoever you can among them with your voice" (Al-Isra: 64). It is recommended to read the Qur'an, as it suffices against forbidden singing. It was reported from Muhammad ibn al-Munkadir that Allah will say on the Day of Resurrection: "Where are those who kept themselves and their hearing pure from amusement and the flutes of Satan? Admit them into gardens of musk."
