Is water that separates from the place of menstruation najis (ritually impure) even if its color has not changed, especially after istinja’ (washing after excretion) or bathing? And does this contradict the permissibility of using a towel used during menstruation for other purposes? Does the rule “What separates from an impurity before the purification of the area is najis, even if it is unchanged” apply to someone with سلس (incontinence) or one afflicted with dripping urine, and what hardship results from that? What should a menstruating woman do in these cases?

If the place where menstruation occurs contains blood, then whatever separates from it, whether its state has changed or not, before the place is purified, is impure (najis). However, if there is no blood in the place where menstruation occurs, then the water that separates is not impure because it has not come into contact with impurity.

That which comes into contact with menstrual blood is divided into three categories:

1. That which separates having been altered by impurity: This is impure by consensus. 2. That which separates without having been altered, before the purification of the place: This is impure. 3. That which separates without having been altered, after the purification of the place: This is pure, according to the more correct opinion.

A menstruating woman can prevent the spread of blood by wearing a sanitary pad, and a person afflicted with incontinence can place something to prevent the spread of drops, then wash whatever has been stained by impurity.

It is permissible to use a menstruating woman's towel, because her body is pure, and the towel remains pure if it is not used to dry impurity.
