Is what is meant by the Almighty’s saying: (And He withholds the heaven from falling on the earth except by His permission) the falling of the heaven itself, or the falling of parts of it, such as meteorites and shooting stars?

Allah Almighty mentioned in the verse, "And He withholds the heaven from falling on the earth except by His permission," as evidence of His greatness and power. He withholds the heaven, out of mercy for people, lest it fall and destroy them. This is affirmed by the exegetes' statement that "heaven" here refers to what appears to people.

Some scholars have mentioned that the word "heaven" (السماء) may carry several meanings: what is opposite the earth, encompassing what is within it; or rain; or all upper existences. However, the strongest opinion is that what is meant is the well-known heaven, according to the apparent meaning of the word.

Ibn Kathir and Al-Shanqeeti affirmed that Allah's withholding of the heaven is out of His compassion and mercy for people. Al-Shanqeeti pointed out that the verses describing the heaven as a structure or a roof refute the claims of those who assert that it is a void with no substance.
