Is it permissible for a virgin girl who has no guardian to marry herself or to appoint someone from the suitor's family to complete the marriage contract with her mother's consent?
A valid marriage has conditions, the most important of which are the guardian (wali) and witnesses. It is not permissible for a girl to marry herself; rather, her guardian, who is from her agnatic male relatives on her father's side, marries her off. The guardian may delegate someone to perform the marriage. If a lawful marriage is not possible [with this person], then look for someone else, for women are many. The religious commitment and character of both suitors should be ascertained by asking trustworthy individuals. A woman's travel without a mahram (unmarriageable kin) is not permissible except out of necessity or need, and it is not advisable to be lenient regarding it due to the abundance of temptations.
