Does sin befall one who swears by Allah falsely out of necessity to protect a girl from tarnishing her reputation and a married woman from divorce and the breakup of her family?

The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, encouraged the concealment of Muslims' faults. It was obligatory to conceal the faults of the two women and not to disclose their secret. It would have been better not to swear falsely, but rather to use tawriya (equivocation) in the oath, as it provides an escape from lying. Lying may even be obligatory if the intended purpose is obligatory, such as hiding a Muslim from an oppressor. Since the questioner has expiated her oath, it is hoped that she will be forgiven due to her good intention. The expiation for an oath is: feeding ten poor persons, or clothing them, or freeing a slave; and whoever is unable to do so should fast for three days.
