The ruling on a woman seeking religious knowledge varies according to the type of knowledge sought. Learning the individual obligation (fard al-ayn) is incumbent upon every mukallaf (accountable person), which is knowing what Allah the Almighty has obligated upon each individual concerning beliefs and acts of worship, due to the Prophet's (peace and blessings be upon him) saying: "Seeking knowledge is an obligation upon every Muslim." As for other religious sciences, it is a communal obligation (fard al-kifayah) for her to learn them, or it is recommended for her. It may become an individual obligation for her to learn a communal obligation if no one else is fit for it besides her. She must adhere to the rulings and etiquettes of Islamic law when seeking knowledge.
