What is the method a mother should follow in dealing with her grandmother who is committing illegal acts and causing harm to the family and to others, knowing that the mother tries to advise her but the grandmother refuses and insists on giving the mother money? And should the family report her to remove the harm from themselves and from the oppressed, and would not reporting her make them complicit in her actions and sinful?
A mother must be dutiful and kind to her own mother. Part of this dutifulness is enjoining her to do good and forbidding her from evil, gently and respectfully, without harshness or offense. Imam Ahmad said: "He [a son/daughter] should enjoin his parents to do good and forbid them from evil... If he sees his father doing something he dislikes, he should inform him without violence or offense, and without harshness in speech. Otherwise, he should leave it, for a father is not like a stranger."
Imam Ahmad was asked about visiting relatives in usurped land. He said: "He should visit them and encourage them to leave it. If they agree, then good. Otherwise, he should not stay with them, but he should not abandon visiting them."
Ibn Baz said: "Parents hold a great status, so a child should not abandon them. Rather, he should gently advise them and guide them to good, seeking assistance from maternal uncles, brothers, or paternal uncles if available."
As for reporting her to the police, it is permissible if it is the means to deter her after advising and warning her, and provided that no harm results to her from it.
