How do we reconcile the statement of the disbelievers when they are resurrected on the Day of Judgment: "Who has raised us from our sleeping place?" with the hadiths that speak of the torment of the grave?

Punishment in the grave is affirmed by the Qur’an, the Sunnah, and the consensus of the Ahl al-Sunnah wal-Jama’ah. There is no contradiction between this and what is stated in the verse, "Who has awakened us from our sleeping place?" (Quran 36:52); for their expression "sleeping place" does not negate the punishment. Rather, it indicates that their minds were overwhelmed and terrified by the horrors of the Day of Judgment, so what they endured in the grave became like sleep compared to the immense hardships yet to come.
