There is no objection to stuffing a hairstyle with wool or cloth to secure it, for what is forbidden is al-wasl (hair extensions), not securing the hair. It is understood from the ruling on al-wasl that if silk or foreign hair is distinct from the hair of the head and not connected to it, then there is no prohibition. However, if it is connected to it, it becomes wasl. Similarly, there is no objection to parting the hair diagonally or in triangles, provided it is free from imitation. Working as a hairdresser is permissible unless there is another reason for prohibition. The phrase "mā'ilāt mumīlāt" (inclining and causing to incline) has various interpretations.
