The forbidden is what Allah has forbidden in His Book or His Messenger in his Sunnah, and the obligatory is what Allah or His Messenger has made obligatory. Whoever claims sufficiency with the Quran without the Sunnah has lied in his claim of Islam. The Quran commanded obedience to the Messenger and emulation of him, and the Sunnah clarifies and explains it, and it is obligatory because it is a revelation. A Muslim cannot perform acts of worship, such as the details of prayer, zakat, and Hajj, without the Sunnah. The Sunnah independently obligates some acts of worship and forbids some matters, such as men wearing gold and silk, and forbids musical instruments, as stated in authentic hadiths. Scholars have unanimously agreed on the prohibition of musical instruments except for the drum (daf). Submission to the Sunnah is obligatory, for what the Messenger has forbidden is like what Allah has forbidden.
