What is the correct method for ritual purification, and is one ablution sufficient for all prayers as long as nothing invalidating occurs other than madhi (prostatic fluid), for a person who suffers from urinary dripping and the involuntary discharge of madhi, and is compelled to perform ablution for every prayer?
If urinary incontinence ( سلس البول ) occupies all the time, such that the worshipper finds no time for purification ( طهارة ) and prayer, then one must take precautions by placing something that prevents the spread of impurity ( نجاسة ), and perform ablution ( وضوء ) for each prayer after its time has begun. However, if there is a time available for purification and prayer during which nothing exits, then purification must be performed and prayer offered within that time when nothing exits. The same ruling applies to madhy (pre-ejaculatory fluid) incontinence.
If the incontinence ( حدث ) is continuous for half the prayer time or more, it is permissible to follow the Maliki school of thought, which does not consider it to invalidate ablution. However, if it is continuous for less than half the time, it does invalidate ablution. According to the Malikis, it is recommended for a person with incontinence to perform ablution for each prayer, but it is not obligatory, whereas the majority of scholars deem it obligatory.
If previous prayers were performed without valid ablution, then according to the majority of scholars, their re-performance ( قضاء ) is obligatory. However, Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah was of the opinion that it is not obligatory to re-perform what has passed for someone who omitted a condition due to ignorance of its ruling, but they must adhere to it in the future. One is not required to investigate the emission of madhy unless its exit is certain.
