What is the way to remain steadfast in repentance from smoking and some forbidden things, and to get rid of the whispers that lead to isolating oneself from people?
One must praise Allah for guiding them to perform some of the obligatory duties. It is not appropriate to say, "I have given Allah His rights," because this implies the fulfillment of all rights, which is contradicted by returning to smoking and some forbidden acts. This is an illusion that Ibn al-Qayyim drew attention to, as he mentioned that a servant often neglects duties they are unaware of, or are aware of but neglect due to carelessness or a mistaken interpretation. He emphasized that the obligations of the heart are more binding than the obligations of the body, and many people consider them to be merely voluntary acts. Furthermore, some may commit forbidden acts of the heart, which are more sinful, while being hesitant to commit the slightest apparent forbidden acts. And some people may worship Allah by abandoning what He has made obligatory upon them, such as enjoining good and forbidding evil. Regarding smoking, one must strive to quit it, and if one returns to it, they should hasten to repent. This is not considered a nullification of the first repentance if it was sincere.
