What is the ruling on smoking for someone who knows it is forbidden but does not quit?

Smoking is forbidden and has severe harms. It is obligatory to abandon the sin and repent from it. Allah Almighty says: "The repentance accepted by Allah is only for those who do wrong in ignorance [or carelessness] and then repent soon after. It is those to whom Allah will turn in forgiveness." If a smoker returns to the sin after repenting, this is not considered persistence as long as he repents sincerely each time, because persistence is the determination to continue in disobedience. Minor sins can become major sins through persistence, underestimation, or taking pleasure in them. Persistence is realized by resolving to commit the minor sin after completing it, or by continually committing it. The smoker must repent to Allah sincerely, and if he weakens and returns to it, he should seek forgiveness and repent, and not persist in the sin without striving. Allah forgives the servant who sins and then repents, even if the sin and repentance are repeated.
