What is the ruling on one who commits a sin, being certain that it is a sin and that its prohibition is a matter of consensus, yet despite their attempts to distance themselves from it and their struggle against their own soul, they cling to it even more?

For sincere repentance, a servant must be truthful with Allah Almighty and strive to help himself overcome his desires, for "if you are truthful with Allah, He will be truthful with you." He must be mindful of Allah's constant watch over him, in private and in public, and remember the seriousness of sins and their harms, such as hardening of the heart, deprivation of obedience, and constriction of the chest. He must also distance himself from places of sin and bad company, and remember the bliss of Paradise and the punishment of Hellfire. By remembering these matters and being truthful with Allah, he will abandon sins, by Allah's permission.
