Is it permissible or forbidden to purchase a discount card that enables its buyer and his relatives to obtain a discount ranging between 5-10% on purchases not included in offers from a store that describes itself as Islamic?
Purchasing a discount card is impermissible according to the most preponderant opinion, as it is a contract of (excessive uncertainty) and jahalah (ignorance), and it is considered a form of consuming wealth unlawfully. This is because the seller takes its value without a known compensation, and the buyer does not know the amount of discount he will receive. Moreover, the buyer may not need anything from the seller. This contract is similar to qimar (gambling), which is any contract that oscillates between gain and loss. Sheikh Bakr bin Abdullah Abu Zayd was of the opinion that it is not permissible to issue, possess, or deal with these cards, because there is no need for what is unlawful. The Islamic Fiqh Academy’s resolution also stated the prohibition of discount cards if they are obtained for a fixed price or an annual subscription fee.
