Ibn Rustam is Abd al-Rahman ibn Rustam (d. 171 AH), the founder of the city of Tahert and the first ruler of the Rustamids. He was an Ibadi jurist and an ascetic, and he authored a book on (Qur'anic exegesis). He founded Tahert in 161 AH after fleeing from Kairouan. As for Yusuf ibn Tashfin, he was the Amir of the Almoravids. He built Marrakech and made it the capital of his kingdom. He was known for his religiosity and firmness, as he unified Morocco and Andalusia under the banner of and , and halted the advance of the Crusaders in Andalusia for four centuries. The Almoravids were distinguished by wearing the litham (face veil), and the reason for this goes back to an incident where their women defended their homes disguised in men's clothing and veiled.
