What is the ruling on a university female student participating in a mixed-gender group on Facebook and conversing with colleagues of both sexes respectfully and courteously, sometimes with humor, despite there being no necessity for the conversation most of the time?

It is permissible to participate in public forums and groups provided they adhere to Sharia guidelines. Caution must be exercised in interactions between young men and young women, and jesting should be avoided as it may lead to fitna (temptation or discord). It is preferable for a Muslim to avoid such groups unless there is a clear benefit and security from fitna.
