What is the ruling on celebrating the Gregorian New Year with the intention of bringing joy, not celebrating Christian holidays?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

Allah has honored Muslims with two Eids: Eid al-Adha and Eid al-Fitr. Abu Dawud and Ahmad reported on the authority of Anas that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said concerning two days of play that Muslims had during the pre-Islamic era (Jahiliyyah): "Allah has replaced them for you with two better days: Eid al-Adha and Eid al-Fitr." Thus, these two Eids were legislated, and others were abolished. It is not permissible to participate with polytheists in their festivals, even outwardly, because outward resemblance leads to inward resemblance, and showing joy and happiness is a great objective of celebration.
