Marital life is not devoid of problems; even the homes of prophets were not free from them. A husband must bear with the shortcomings and deficiencies in his wife. Before divorcing, consider the potential reasons for your wife’s problems. You might be the cause due to your ill-treatment or sins, or your wife may be suffering from a deficiency in intellect, which is common among women. You should also consider the fate of the children and the negative effects of divorce on them and on your wife, bearing in mind the necessity of either retaining her honorably or releasing her kindly. Remember the Prophet’s (peace be upon him) advice: "A believing man should not hate a believing woman; if he dislikes one of her characteristics, he will be pleased with another."
