Is it permissible to use an electronic counter that automatically counts the rak'ahs to ascertain the number of rak'ahs for the worshiper in case of inattentiveness or forgetfulness, whether in obligatory or supererogatory prayers?

Counting the rak'ahs in prayer has its origins in the actions of the Salaf, who used rings, date pits, pebbles, and fingers to count, as 'Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) did. Jurists such as Ibn Rajab, Al-Kharashi, and Al-Uthaymeen have permitted this.

However, this prayer mat that counts the rak'ahs may distract the worshipper and cause them to lose focus. Furthermore, it does not calculate all the pillars and duties of prayer, which limits its benefit.

The prayer mat is permissible and useful for those who suffer from obsessive-compulsive disorder or frequent forgetfulness. However, it is not recommended for those who do not need it, and relying on it may lead to blameworthy over-elaboration and the loss of humility and presence of heart in prayer.
