Is the advice of the prophets and Gabriel (peace be upon them) in a dream binding?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

The vision of the Prophets or Gabriel (peace be upon them) in a dream, if it is truthful and the person sees the Prophet in his true form and he commands him with something that is in accordance with the Sharia, then it is a good vision. One must act upon the advice that conforms to the Sharia, not merely based on the dream. However, if it contradicts the Sharia, then it holds no weight, for the Sharia takes precedence over every vision. Visions do not establish legal rulings; rather, they are merely a source of reassurance. They are among the glad tidings of prophethood, but they are not a source of legislation. Ibn Hajar said: "The vision of those other than the Prophets does not establish a legal ruling." No matter how many visions one sees, it is not permissible to rely on them if they contradict the pure Sharia, because Allah has perfected the religion.
