Does an oath take effect when repeating sayings or chants that include formulas of swearing (by God, my Lord, and so on)?

An "inviolable oath" (al-yamin al-mun'aqidah) is one that the swearer intends. As for merely narrating someone else's oath without intention, it is not an oath and nothing results from it. "Laghw" (idle oath) is what runs on the tongue without intention, such as saying "No, by God" or "Yes, by God" in the context of ordinary conversation. There is no expiation for it according to most scholars, because it falls under "laghw al-yamin" (idle oaths), which are oaths that the heart does not intend, such as those made in arguments, jest, or play. The proof is Allah's saying: {Allah will not impose blame upon you for what is unintentional in your oaths, but He will impose blame upon you for what you intended of oaths. So its expiation is the feeding of ten needy people.}
