Is the sacrifice of two animals for a male newborn and one animal for a female newborn a Sunnah or an obligation, what is the purpose of that, and how did the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, clarify it?

The 'Aqiqah is the sacrifice slaughtered for a newborn. Scholars have differed regarding its ruling, between obligation and emphasized Sunnah. The majority of scholars hold that it is an emphasized Sunnah: two sheep for a boy and one sheep for a girl. It is slaughtered on the seventh day of the newborn's life, though it is permissible to delay it. As for the purpose of the 'Aqiqah, it is indicated by the Hadith: "Every child is mortgaged by his 'Aqiqah." This has been interpreted to mean that it might prevent the child from interceding for his parents if an 'Aqiqah is not performed for him, or that it is a means to free the child from Satan and protect him. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, clarified the rulings of the 'Aqiqah in several Hadiths, including: "With the child is an 'Aqiqah, so spill blood for him and remove the harm from him," and "For a boy, two equivalent sheep, and for a girl, one sheep," and that it is slaughtered for him on the seventh day, his head is shaved, and he is named.
