What is the ruling on one who craves food upon seeing it during the daytime in Ramadan, yet does not intend to break his fast?
Source: FtawySummarized from the full answer at Ftawy · imported Sep 2, 2026
There is no harm for the fasting person in craving food upon seeing it, as long as he refrains from consuming it, due to the Prophet's (peace and blessings be upon him) saying: "He leaves his food and his desire for My sake." This does not affect his fast as long as he does not resolve to break it. As for resolving to break the fast, the Malikis and Hanbalis held that it invalidates the fast. The Shafi'is have two views, and Al-Nawawi, Al-Zarkashi, and Al-Suyuti affirmed that it does not invalidate the fast if he does not consume anything that breaks the fast. The Hanafis definitively stated that it does not invalidate the fast.
