The word ṭīrah (evil omen) is derived from taṭayyur (superstition, pessimism). In the pre-Islamic era (Jahiliyyah), if one of them saw a bird fly to his right, he considered it a good omen and proceeded, but if it flew to his left, he considered it a bad omen and turned back. If pessimism is not accompanied by action, it is called taṭayyur; but if it is accompanied by action, it is called ṭīrah, which is acting upon hearing or seeing something disliked.
