Linguistically and technically, al-tatayyur (superstitious belief in omens) means pessimism. The Arabs during the pre-Islamic era (Jahiliyyah) would feel pessimistic or optimistic based on the movement of birds. Islam abolished this practice and forbade it, considering it a form of shirk (polytheism or associating partners with God). It becomes major shirk if the one who practices tatayyur believes that what he saw is inherently influential. It becomes minor shirk if he finds some fear within himself but does not firmly resolve against it. The Sacred Law forbade tatayyur due to its weakening of faith in divine decree (qadar) and reliance on other than Allah, whereas everything occurs by divine decree and preordainment.
