Do hanging plaques and pictures that contain the word of Majesty (Allah), or Qur'anic verses, or noble Prophetic sayings, and what is written on the walls of homes or shops of verses such as "What Allah wills, there is no strength except through Allah" and "Indeed, We have granted you a clear triumph," for the sake of seeking blessings from them, fall under the ruling of amulets, and what is their ruling?

The basic ruling concerning amulets (tama'im) is prohibition, based on the Prophet's (peace be upon him) saying: "Indeed, ruqya, amulets, and at-Tawila are shirk (definition)." Scholars have differed regarding hanging amulets if they contain Quranic verses, but the majority of verified opinions lean towards prohibition as a means of blocking pretexts (saddan lidh-dhari'a). As for writing the Quran on walls, some scholars disliked it if there was a fear of exposing the Quran to disrespect, and they prohibited it if disrespect was certain. The guidance of the Salaf (pious predecessors) in benefiting from the Quran was through its recitation, contemplation, acting upon it, and reciting it over the sick. Merely hanging it was not part of their guidance. Therefore, it is advised not to hang it and to replace this practice with recitation, listening, and reading Surat al-Baqarah in the home.
