Sheikh Omar Rida Kahalah was a contemporary writer and an encyclopedic scholar. He managed the Zahiriyah Library in Damascus for three decades. He authored "Mu'jam al-Mu'allifin" (Dictionary of Authors) to translate biographies of Arab and non-Arab authors of Arabic books, from the beginning of writing until the modern era, including poets and narrators. He mentioned their lives, deaths, scholarly status, and works. He has other works, such as "Mu'jam Qabail al-Arab" (Dictionary of Arab Tribes) and "Mawsu'at A'lam al-Nisa'" (Encyclopedia of Famous Women).
