What are the controls set by scholars for interpreting the Holy Quran?

The principles of sound interpretation according to scholars are: interpreting the Qur’an by the Qur’an, then by theSunnah, then by the sayings of the Companions, while avoiding weak and fabricated narrations and Isra’iliyyat (stories from Jewish traditions), and then by what was transmitted from the Tabi'in (successors). The exegete must also possess knowledge of the Arabic language and its rules, the principles of fiqh (Islamic jurisprudence), the reasons for revelation, the Makki and Madani verses, and have a precise understanding and natural aptitude.
