The Council of the Islamic Fiqh Academy, in its fifth session, decided several matters regarding birth control, the most important of which are: It is not permissible to issue a general law restricting the freedom of spouses to procreate. Sterilization (removing the ability to procreate) is forbidden except in cases of lawful necessity. Temporary birth control is permissible to space out pregnancies or to stop them for a certain period if there is a legally recognized need, as determined and agreed upon by both spouses, provided there is no harm, the method is lawful, and it does not involve aggression against an existing pregnancy.
