What is the reason for the state some people reach where, despite being treated kindly, they remain unchanged, confirming His Almighty's saying: "And among the people is he whose speech may please you in worldly life, and he calls Allah to witness as to what is in his heart, yet he is the fiercest of opponents"?

Continuing to be patient and reciprocating ill-treatment with kindness protects its possessor from the evil of wrongdoers and safeguards him from their plots, transforming their state from enmity to friendship. This results in the companionship of Allah, as He states: "And not equal are the good deed and the bad. Repel [evil] with that which is better; then abruptly your enemy will be as if he were a devoted friend." And that Allah grants victory to whoever fears Him and patiently endures harm and injustice.
