What is Ramadan?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

Ramadan is a special month in Islam. Fasting during it is the fourth pillar of Islam. The Qur'an was revealed in it, and Laylat al-Qadr (the Night of Decree) is specific to it. In it, the gates of Paradise are opened, the gates of Hell are closed, and the devils are chained. Furthermore, fasting and standing in prayer during it, out of faith and hope for reward, are a cause for the forgiveness of sins. Every night in Ramadan, Allah frees people from the Hellfire. Fasting in it atones for sins and is equivalent to fasting for ten months. Performing Umrah in it is equal to performing Hajj. It is also recommended to perform I'tikaf (spiritual retreat), study the Qur'an, and provide food for fasting people to break their fast.
