What is the ruling on one who said to his wife, "If you return to that, then this is a separation between us," intending to intimidate and not to divorce?

The word "firaq" (separation/divorce) is considered among the allusive terms for divorce according to the majority of scholars. Therefore, divorce does not occur by it unless there is an intention for divorce. If you intended to frighten (your wife) and did not intend divorce, then no divorce takes place. One should be cautious of using divorce-related words during anger and disputes to protect the marital life.
