What is known as the Pledge of Al-Ridwan?

The Pledge of Ridwan (Pledge of Good Pleasure) was the pledge made by the Companions to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, in the year of Hudaybiyyah, to fight Quraysh and not flee until death. Its cause was the rumor of Uthman's death. It was named so because of Allah's good pleasure with them. Their number was about 1400 Companions. The Qur'an mentioned it in His (Allah's) saying: "Certainly was Allah pleased with the believers when they pledged allegiance to you under the tree, and He knew what was in their hearts, so He sent down tranquillity upon them and rewarded them with an imminent conquest." [Al-Fath: 18]. And among what was reported regarding their virtue is the saying of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him: "No one who pledged allegiance under the tree shall enter Hellfire."
