Should the son obey his mother in divorcing his wife to please his brother, or should he remain with his wife despite his family's displeasure?

The mother's right is great, and honoring her is one of the best acts of drawing near to Allah. However, obedience to her is only in what is good and permissible. Therefore, a man is not obligated to divorce his wife merely because his mother commands him to do so. This is not considered an act of honoring her; rather, he should not do that.

Imam Ahmad explicitly stated that divorce is not to be done at the mother's command, and Sheikh Taqi al-Din mentioned that divorcing one's wife is not an act of honoring the mother.

Thus, he should keep his wife with kindness and honor his mother by treating her well financially and emotionally. He should also maintain ties with his siblings even if they cut him off, because the one who maintains ties is he who reconnects with his kin when they sever ties.
