Is expiation obligatory upon the husband if he says to his wife, "You are unlawful to me," jokingly and without intending the meaning?

If a man declares his wife forbidden to him without intending anything by it, he must offer expiation for breaking an oath. This is the view of Ibn Uthaymeen, who based his reasoning on the Prophet’s (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) saying: “Actions are but by intentions,” and on the Almighty’s saying: "O Prophet, why do you prohibit that which Allah has made lawful for you, seeking to please your wives? And Allah is Forgiving, Merciful. Allah has already ordained for you the dissolution of your oaths. And Allah is your protector, and He is the All-Knower, the Wise." This expiation is not waived by jesting, for whoever jests about disbelief, divorce, marriage, or revocation of divorce is held accountable for the meaning by the Lawgiver.
