What is the ruling on a quantity of blood coming down all at once during the daytime in Ramadan, then stopping, knowing that this was not the usual time of menstruation and that the questioner had menstruated twice in the same month previously? Is this blood considered menstruation requiring ghusl? And if it is not menstruation, is expiation obligatory along with making up the day for one who broke her fast, assuming it was menstruation?

The blood discharged during the menstrual period (the total duration of which, including its preceding flow and the clean interval between them, does not exceed 15 days) is considered menstruation, necessitating a ritual bath (ghusl) after its cessation. However, if its duration exceeds 15 days and there is no interval of 13 days or more separating the two blood flows, then it is considered istihadah (non-menstrual vaginal bleeding). If there is an interval of 13 days or more separating the two blood flows, then this is a point of disagreement among jurists, and the more cautious approach is to perform ghusl from it. The questioner must make up the day she missed fasting in Ramadan, and no expiation (kaffarah) is required of her.
