The answer

The nisab (threshold) for banknotes is determined by the market value of gold and silver. If you possess the equivalent of 85 grams of gold, and a full year has passed (hawl) while it is in your possession, then zakat becomes obligatory. As for savings accounts, they are not permissible if they involve usurious interest or if the money is deposited in a usurious bank while it is possible to deposit it in a non-usurious bank. Unlawfully acquired money is subject to zakat after a full year has passed, and the usurious interest should be spent on charitable endeavors.
