What is the ruling on one who takes from the religion what suits his whims, performing some acts of worship while persisting in some sins? And is repenting from backbiting while desiring to hear it considered toying with the rulings of religion?

The servant must fully adhere to Islam, entering into all its laws and not abandoning any of them. He must oppose the ways of Satan and not follow his footsteps, for Satan is a clear enemy who commands evil and indecency.

If a servant slips after clear proofs have come to him, he must know that Allah is All-Mighty, All-Wise, punishing the disobedient according to His wisdom.

A servant should not be prevented from an act of obedience merely because he does not perform all other obligations. Repentance, even with persistence in some sins, is valid according to the majority of scholars.

It is forbidden to listen to backbiting. A Muslim must abandon it and avoid listening to it. Whoever listens to it is disobedient and must repent.
