Should one respect an imperfect father who drinks alcohol, uses drugs, and mistreats his wife and children?
It is obligatory to show filial piety and kindness to one's parents, even if they are disbelievers or wicked. Among the greatest forms of kindness is to supplicate for their guidance and to offer them sincere advice, for Allah may guide them through you. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said to Ali: "By Allah, for Allah to guide one man through you is better for you than red camels." As for considering him ideal, that contradicts reality; rather, he is extravagant with himself in disobedience, and he should be treated on this basis, while preserving his right to filial piety and obedience in what is good.
