Is it permissible to dig a well on behalf of a child afflicted with hemophilia, and is his recovery hoped for in the same manner as the story of Ibn al-Mubarak?

1. It has been authentically reported from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, that it is desirable to seek healing through charity (sadaqah). Some scholars have gone so far as to dig a well for a sick person in hopes of their recovery.

2. Ibn al-Hajj held that charity repels calamities, and that the sick person or their guardian should give charity according to their circumstances. If the illness is severe or the person is wealthy, they should give abundantly. If they are poor, then "the effort of the one with little" is sufficient.

3. Giving water as charity has great merit and is among the best forms of charity. Healing through charity is not limited to digging wells; rather, it encompasses all types of voluntary charity.

4. Among the sayings and experiences of the Salaf (pious predecessors) regarding healing through charity: - Ibn al-Mubarak ordered a man to dig a well to heal from an ulcer on his knee, and he did so and was cured. - Al-Hakim Abu Abdullah suffered from sores on his face. A woman who saw the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, in a dream, commanded him to "provide abundant water for the Muslims." So, he built a water dispenser and was cured. - Al-Khabbazi fell gravely ill, and his neighbor advised him to give charity. He bought watermelons and gave them as charity to the poor and children. They supplicated for his recovery, and he was healed. - Scholars would prepare food with the meat of a whole ram and invite people with broken hearts to supplicate for healing. Some would give the most beloved of their possessions as charity for the healing of their sick loved one.
