If the deceased was poor, who is responsible for covering the costs of their shrouding, washing, and burial?

If the deceased possessed wealth, the expenses for their burial preparations are taken from their money before settling their debts, legacies, and inheritance, because these preparations are among their essential needs. If they did not possess wealth, their shrouding becomes obligatory upon whoever is responsible for their maintenance (such as their father, son, or husband). If no such person exists, then it is from the treasury of the Muslims (Bayt al-Mal), and if not, then it falls upon the general Muslim community. A husband must shroud his wife, whether she was wealthy or poor, but a wife is not obligated to shroud her husband.
