What is the ruling on buying an item for someone and taking a commission without their knowledge?

If someone commissions you to buy an item for him, it is not permissible to take a commission without informing him of it; because it is not permissible for an agent to take a commission without his principal's knowledge. If you took it without his knowledge, you must seek his forgiveness or return the amount to him.
