Is it permissible to reject a suitor because he is short, or to stipulate that he must have a high degree and a prestigious profession?

The first thing a woman should consider in a man she wishes to marry is his religious commitment and character, due to the saying of the Prophet, peace be upon him: "If there comes to you one whose character and religious commitment you approve, then marry him. If you do not do so, there will be tribulation on earth and widespread corruption."

If this aspect is taken into consideration, then there is no harm in seeking other good qualities such as height and social status. However, it is blameworthy to reject a man of religious commitment and good character because of these qualities. Excessive pickiness in seeking a suitor may lead to a woman remaining unmarried.
