What is the concept of justice in Islam, and is material and moral justice always required, even when it is unfair to some people?

Justice is placing something in its rightful position as commanded by Allah. It is an Islamic objective that encompasses all aspects of life, and examples include:

1. Justice in ruling among people: As in the Almighty's saying: ﴿إِنَّ اللَّهَ يَأْمُرُكُمْ أَنْ تُؤَدُّوا الْأَمَانَاتِ إِلَى أَهْلِهَا وَإِذَا حَكَمْتُمْ بَيْنَ النَّاسِ أَنْ تَحْكُمُوا بِالْعَدْلِ﴾ [An-Nisa: 58]. (Indeed, Allah commands you to render trusts to whom they are due and when you judge between people to judge with justice.) 2. Justice with enemies: As in His saying: ﴿وَلا يَجْرِمَنَّكُمْ شَنَآنُ قَوْمٍ عَلَى أَلَّا تَعْدِلُوا اعْدِلُوا هُوَ أَقْرَبُ لِلتَّقْوَى﴾ [Al-Ma'idah: 8]. (And let not the hatred of a people prevent you from being just. Be just; that is nearer to righteousness.) 3. Justice with oneself: By not destroying it with excessive worship, and by giving everyone their due right. 4. Justice with wives: In maintenance and in dividing time for overnight stays, and a severe warning has been mentioned for whoever inclines towards one of them. 5. Justice with children: By not preferring some over others in gifts, as the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Fear Allah and be just among your children."

Justice has immense benefits, among them: the love of Allah the Almighty, the entry of the just person into the shade of Allah on the Day of Resurrection, and the elevation of their status on pulpits of light to the right of the Most Merciful. The fruits of justice and its reward increase in magnitude the less it is practiced and the more widespread injustice becomes.
